    Regular Workshop Topics
    effective school shadowing

Many schools employ school shadows as a means to integrate students with ASD successfully. This workshop is designed for both teachers and aides working with children on the autism spectrum. We will discuss how to develop an effective plan for working within classroom settings as a team and how to fade a shadow. We will also address how to encourage and teach social skills in inclusive settings.

Participants will learn:

  1. What is the role of a shadow teacher?
  2. How to develop an effective plan for classroom shadowing
  3. How to fade shadow support

  teaching self help skills

Self-help skills are critical for independence and autonomy. Basic techniques of forward and backward chaining, prompting and task analysis will all be taught to tackle a myriad of different life skills such as dressing, completing homework, organizational skills, taking a shower, etc.

Participants will learn:

    1. What is forward and backward chaining?
    2. Advantages and disadvantages of these strategies
    3. How to apply the learned principles in teaching self-help skills

    how to manage behavioral problems

Behavioral problems if not tackled properly, often affect learning and family life. In this workshop, we will discuss different kinds of management techniques to deal with tantrums, self-stimulation, inattention and non-compliance. There will also be plenty of time to answer questions and discuss cases and problems that participants currently face at home or at school.

Participants will learn:

    1. How to identify the functions of a behavior
    2. How to react to various behavioral problems
    3. How to identify what replacement skills to teach
    4. How to come up with a comprehensive, reactive and proactive behavior plan

advanced language development for children with autism

How to effectively teach play skills and have children engaged in constructive activities

Play is a very important element in children’s development. Every child learns through different kinds of play and playing with peers. In this workshop, we will teach parents different effective techniques to maximize the fun and learning opportunities in different play situations.

Participants will learn:
1. How to teach play skills in different contexts
2. How to set up play situations
3. How to develop a wider range of play interest

how to develop your child’s spontaneous speech

Children with autism can often have difficulties communicating with others. This becomes especially apparent when looking at spontaneous speech. In this workshop, we will examine a range of ideas and interventions designed to increase a student’s spontaneous speech and interaction in different social and play settings.

Participants will learn:

1. How to set up learning opportunities
2. How to encourage and motivate your child to speak
3. What are the techniques for expanding their speech?

    discrete trial training

DTT is the most effective teaching methodology for children with autism, especially for those who just begin treatment because its clear structure helps clarify instruction and learning input. But if DTT is done too rigidly or too loosely, it will affect learning outcome, so how do you apply the best practice of DTT? In this workshop, we will focus on training parents/ professionals in how to deliver the basic skills of a discrete trial.

Participants will learn:

1. What is a discrete trial?
2. What is a prompt?
3. The different kinds of prompts that can be used
4. How to apply the method in role playing sessions
